Water & Natural Gas Outage Guide
KUB is proud to provide reliable utility services to its customers and works hard each day to maintain and improve that reliabiliy.
KUB's Century II infrastructure management program supports continued reliability and resiliency through regular replacement of aging infrastructure, which can cause water main breaks. Additionally, KUB works to prevent third-party damage on its natural gas system through a robust Damage Prevention program focused on educating the general public and professional excavators about the importance of calling 811 before digging to have underground utilities marked.
When a rare water or natural gas outage occurs, KUB works to make repairs and restore service to customers as safely and quickly as possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I report an outage?
Outages can be reported online or by calling 865-524-2911.
What causes water outages?
A water outage is rare, but when ones does occur, it is usually caused by a water main break.
A water main break can be caused by aging infrastructure or by shifts that occur underground during extremely cold weather as the ground freezes and thaws. In many instances of a water main break, KUB is able to minimize or eliminate customer impact quickly by re-routing water flow to customer homes and businesses.
KUB's Century II infrastructure management program also supports continued reliability and resiliency through regular replacement of aging infrastructure. Learn more about Century II here.
What causes natural gas outages?
A natural gas outage is rare, but when one does occur, it is usually caused by a "dig-in". A dig-in occurs when someone digs into a pipe underground and damages it. KUB works to prevent this type of damage through a robust Damage Prevention program focused on educating the general public and professional excavators about the importance of calling 811 before digging to have underground utilities marked.

Does KUB ever turn service off intentionally?
KUB maintains a robust infrastructure maintenance and replacement program called Century II. Some Century II construction projects require service to be turned off to safely complete the work. In these cases, customers are notified of a planned power outage via direct mail, a door hanger, or a phone call.
What is the process to have my natural gas service restored?
In the event of a rare natural gas outage, customers can expect the following process:
- A KUB technician will promptly visit each impacted customer's home or business to safely shut down the natural gas meter.
- KUB crews will work as quickly and safely as possible to repair damage causing the outage.
- A KUB technician will return to each impacted customer's home or business to re-light natural gas service. This requires the technician to access each home or business. If the customer is not present when the technician arrives to re-light service, the technician will leave a door hanger with information about scheduling a time for the technician to return.
Can I re-light my own natural gas service after an outage?
No. Customer safety is KUB's top priority, so customers are asked to wait for a trained KUB professional to arrive and re-light gas service.
Is my water quality impacted by a water outage?
No, water quality is not impacted by a typical water outage. KUB goes above and beyond state and federal requirements to ensure its water is the highest quality. KUB operators monitor system-wide pressure around the clock, including during any water outages, and ensure that flow pressure remains far above the level that may lead to water quality concerns.
Call 811 Before You Dig
